Corrigan turned and charged forward, the fading sun gleaming off of his armor. The pallor of the coming Scourge enveloped him, the small wasps and biting insects finding their way around the plates in the armor, biting him and making him ill. He fought back the urge to fall to his knees retching as he met the first wave of ghouls.
He shouted to the powers of Light as he swung his hammer, crushing the head of several ghouls with that one swing. Their bodies scattered as the next rank moved forward. Corrigan began channeling as much energy he could to destroy the oncoming horde of undead.
Rondrey was just regaining his feet as he watched the paladin single handedly hold off the oncoming scourge army. Light flashed and pierced the clouds of Scourge plague, centered on Corrigan. The paladin was holding them off, amazingly. Rondrey was far too exhausted to do more than watch and try to regain his strength. To be honest, he didn’t think the paladin had this much spine in him, much less the ability to push on from here.
Corrigan was nearly spent. He had killed innumerable ghouls, abominations, and gargoyles in the last two hours. He was injured, tired, and weak, his arm unable to lift the hammer for another strike, when the battlefield went silent. He collapsed to his knees, relieved to have the rest. The wounds were going to be fatal, regardless if they were bound or not. After a brief rest, he would continue to fight until he fell.
A large Vrykul death knight stepped forward, brandishing a hammer that froze the air around it. Giving no quarter the death knight growled menacingly as he reared back to smash it down on the kneeling paladin. As the hammer arced downward, Corrigan feebly raised his shield in a futile attempt to block it. He made his final prayers waiting for the impact, but it never came.
He peered out from under the shield to see his attacker’s body smoldering a few feet away, the unearthly glow fading from the eyes. Beyond the corpse, he was surprised to see Rondrey leaning on his staff. The priest limped forward, and lowered himself into the dirt next to the paladin. Overhead, the sun started shining through the now dissipating clouds.
The two men quietly passed as the sun shown down on them, the evacuees safely away and the scourge advance halted.
“…In light of such bravery and valor, we consign this monument to the members of the Alliance that have perished in the war against the Lich King, and the Scourge.” Varian Wrynn paused, looking at the troops and honor guard that had assembled in Stormwind, their faces outwardly calm as though cast from iron. “Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, nor will it be in vain. “ He turned, saluted the statue of a paladin and a priest standing against an unseen foe; he turned again and saluted the soldiers. “Report to the docks and prepare to sail to Northrend.”
